GLP-1 Diet for Indian Vegetarians: What to Eat on Semaglutide, Plate by Plate

I have been prescribed a GLP-1 medicine and I am vegetarian. What should I actually eat?

GLP-1 medicines shrink appetite, so every small meal has to carry more. What a published expert advisory says about protein, fibre, fluids and the nutrients to watch — translated to dal, paneer, curd and sprouts, with the limits of that translation stated.

On a GLP-1 medicine you eat less because you want less, so the food you do eat has to carry the protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals that a larger plate used to. For an Indian vegetarian the practical answer is a small plate with the dal, paneer, curd, soya or sprouts eaten first, and the rice or roti second. This page explains why, using one published expert advisory. It is not a prescription, and it does not replace the doctor who prescribed the medicine.

GLP-1 diet at a glance

  • Protein first: the advisory suggests 1.2–1.6 g per kg of body weight a day during active weight loss, and never dropping to very low intakes.
  • Small meals, enough water: smaller, more frequent meals and adequate fluid are its main advice for nausea and constipation.
  • Watch three nutrients: vitamin B12, vitamin D and calcium are named as at risk. India’s dietary guidelines call B12 a challenge for vegetarians, so ask about testing.

Why does diet matter more on a GLP-1 medicine?

Generic semaglutide reached Indian pharmacies on 21 March 2026, after the patent expired, and several companies now sell it. More people are therefore eating much less, quickly. The advisory reports that these medicines reduced body weight by 5–18% in trials. It also reports that part of the weight lost is lean tissue rather than fat: in one trial it describes, 5.3 kg of an average 13.6 kg lost was lean mass. Its answer is adequate protein and regular strength training, not a special product.

How much protein do you need on semaglutide?

For someone who eats no meat, fish or egg, 80 g or more of protein on a small appetite is hard. It takes planning, and sometimes a supplement a dietitian recommends. How to get 60 g of protein a day as a Gujarati vegetarian shows the arithmetic for ordinary food, and paneer vs tofu vs soya chunks compares the densest sources.

What to eat on a GLP-1 medicine: an Indian vegetarian plate

  1. Start the meal with the protein. The advisory itself suggests eating protein-rich foods first. Thick dal, paneer, curd, soya chunks, sprouted moong or chana. If you fill up after six bites, those six bites should be the protein.
  2. Then the vegetables. Cooked sabzi or a salad, for fibre, potassium and volume.
  3. Then a small portion of rice, roti or millet. Not none; just last.
  4. Drink between meals. Water, chaas or thin dal. The advisory stresses fluid because nausea and constipation are common.
  5. Add fibre gradually. The advisory suggests going easy on fatty and very high-fibre foods in the first days after a dose or a dose increase, when the stomach is most unsettled, and building fibre back for constipation.

Which foods should you avoid on a GLP-1 medicine?

The advisory does not ban foods. It suggests avoiding fatty food in the first days of treatment, when nausea is most likely, and its list of foods to minimise includes refined carbohydrates, sweetened drinks, ultra-processed sweets and savoury snacks. That includes fried farsan, and we fry ours. A small portion on a settled day, with a meal, is a different thing from a bowl on an empty, queasy stomach. Sweets and sweetened drinks take up room that protein needed. Alcohol is a question for your doctor.

GLP-1 and vegetarian food — common questions

Can a vegetarian get enough protein on semaglutide?

Often yes, with planning: dal, paneer, curd, soya and sprouts at every meal. Some people will need a supplement. A dietitian should check the numbers, because a small appetite makes it easy to fall short.

Do I need vitamin B12 on a GLP-1 medicine?

The advisory names B12, vitamin D and calcium as nutrients at risk when food intake falls. India’s dietary guidelines list curd among the vegetarian sources and call B12 a challenge for vegetarians. Ask your doctor about a blood test before taking a supplement.

Is salad good on semaglutide?

A bowl with a real protein in it can suit a small appetite. A bowl of leaves alone gives volume and little protein. On a nauseous day, cooked vegetables may sit better than raw.

Can I eat namkeen or farsan on a GLP-1 medicine?

In small amounts on a settled day, if your doctor has not said otherwise. Fatty food can worsen nausea, and a fried snack should not replace a protein food.

Will I regain weight if I stop the medicine?

That is a medical question about your treatment, and only your doctor can answer it for you.
